Do I need to use supplements?
I'll tell you right now, when we work together on improving your health I will be suggesting various supplement protocols as we go along. As much as I believe in the health benefits of eating a healthy whole foods diet, I have found this alone to be not enough to rebalance a body that's been so out of a balance for a long period of time. If you follow a very healthy diet and lifestyle changes most of these protocols will be temporary and are needed only until the body is able to balance by itself. However, if we don't attend to these "imbalances" in your body you will not see results and are more likely to give up and go back to your old ways. Here is a summary from David Rowland's book "Food alone is not enough" of why food supplements are a necessary part of any serious health building program:
1. To compensate for an inborn error of metabolism that makes humans incapable of manufacturing their own ascorbate (vitamin c) internally. 2. To compensate for nutrient losses in our foods due to mineral depletion of the soil. 3. To compensate for the uneven distribution of nutrients in our natural food supply. 4. To replace nutrients lost during food transportation, storage, processing, preserving and cooking. 5. To respond to the extra nutritional demands created by junk foods, refined sugar, alcohol, caffeine and drugs. 6. To help support the body against stress, pollution and demanding lifestyles. 7. To compensate for digestive weaknesses and/or unusually high needs for specific nutrients required by "biochemical individuality". 8. To compensate for inadequate physical activity. 9. To help counteract the nutrient depleting activity of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. 10. To achieve superior nutritional health and not merely the absence of disease.
There are many different brands and types of supplements and it can be difficult to know which ones you will benefit from. Everyone is biochemically unique so every supplement works differently forom person to person. During our counseling sessions, I will provide you with the information necessary to choose the right supplements, brands and the best places to get them. You will save time, money and get results faster!
